  • aboutAbout me

Cihan (Cra0kalo) Solbudak, freelance CG Artist/3D Animator located in Sydney, Australia.

I’m very passionate about CG and 3D and always wanted to get involved in contributing/making something ever since I was a kid. I began messing around with 3D authoring tools very early in my life starting with doom and using its world editor to make my own custom levels, enemies and weapons. Later on I discovered the Source Engine by Valve Software in 2005 and starting putting my creativity to work using the Source SDK to create various pieces of work. I have been using the engine for seven years now modding/animating/texturing/mapping mostly working with animation though since it’s my specialty.

I really enjoy how the 3D industry keeps redefining itself every year to keep pushing the envelope. I believe it is still an infant and we will have to wait to see how huge it will become in the coming years. I hope you learnt a bit about me and what I do, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask me.

    What is Machinima?
Now there has been quite a lot of debate about this, from what I heard and quoting Ross Scott “it’s the combination of Machine & Cinema”. Basically I define it as ‘creating movies and film using a game engine’. Many people get confused with “Machinima.com” and the word ‘Machinima’. Machinima.com is an online entertainment company which started off with people that just wanted to make movies using games, in the very first months of the company people would make these ‘machinimas’ upload them to the website which later would be viewed by others around the world. Further down the track Machinima.com expanded to the YouTube audience uploading the user submitted videos there. In recent years the production of Machinima has declined due to the lack of community support and lack of effort in producing one, since a gameplay commentary can be easily be produced and uploaded whilst machinima requires a story/plot/actors. This lack of effort drew the demand for other types of medians to expand. This caused the company to expand into other areas like live action films, original animation, game commentaries and game trailers.

  • Machinima

    Machinima.com involvement
Back in 2009 I got offered to be a part of Machinima.com’s Directors program, this let me gain access to uploading my videos to their main YouTube channel and reaching newer audiences. I haven’t uploaded many but my current projects should be finished and on there soon. Over the past year I have helped out many people in machinima production including Xanatos with his machinima Hearts & Brains, helping with the facial animation and lip syncing.

    Current Projects with Machinima
Currently I’m working on a Machinima.com series titled Operation Reaper which has been ongoing for some time now. The story revolves around a group of US soldiers on a mission to take out communication towers in a remote Iraq town, which terrorists are using to recruit foreign insurgents. It’s a bit cliché but I hope the series is going to attract some audience, especially those into the recent war shooters out on the market. Utilizing the Source Engine, the popular Garry’s Mod and with the help of iPiSoft’s motion capture suite it’s going to be fun. You can follow the progress at http://projectreaper.com if you wish.

  • Source Engine

    The Source Engine
I have been using the Source engine for three years now and in my opinion it's one of the best engines to use. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about basically the Source engine is a 3D game engine that was developed by Valve Software which has been the engine under the hood of many great titles in gaming like Counter-Strike Source, Half-Life 2, Teamfortress 2 and Left for Dead. There are many more games that utilise Source Engine on the market today but sadly when comparing with other engines it's outdated, still Source is one of the best engines to use for modding, film (machinima) making and playing around with. The Source SDK (Source/Software Development Kit) allows users to create levels, animation, view their models and works great with other 3rd party modding tools and authoring packages.

    Special Thanks
I would like to thank iPi Soft for their support and sponsorship for the reaper project; I employ you to check them out at http://www.ipisoft.com/. Also would like to thank all my friends and people that have helped me with production.
